American Mobsters – Bugsy Siegel – The Man Responsible For Re-Birth of Las Vegas As Gambling Mecca

Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel is the man behind the rebirth of the city of Las Vegas, as the gambling capital of the world.

Siegel was born Benjamin Siegelbaum on February 28, 1906, in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. As a teenager, he crossed the bridge into Manhattan and started a gang on Lafayette Street, which ran through Little Italy, with a gangster named Moe Sedway. Their main strategy was to beat up the cart owners to get security money, and if they weren’t paid quickly, they would burn the owner’s push cart.

Siegel soon became involved with Meyer Lansky, a man who would change his life, and ultimately, his death. Together, they formed the “Bugs and Meyer Gang,” which began stealing cars, and eventually held deals for buyers, whose property was stolen. This organized crime business was the forerunner of the notorious Murder Incorporated, which carried out mass murders in the 1930s.

In the late 1920s, Siegel and Lansky teamed up with famous Italian gangsters like Lucky Luciano, Frank Costello, Joe Adonis, Vito Genovese, Albert Anastasia and Tommy Lucchese. Together they formed the National Crime Commission, which controlled all crime in America for many years. Siegel was the leader of the group, and he led a group of four men, who shot the body of Joe “The Boss” Masseria with bullets in the Coney Island Restaurant. Siegel has built a reputation as someone who doesn’t kill often, but who enjoys killing, with the excitement of a schoolboy on his first day.

In the late 1930s, the Commission sent Siegel to California to take over their West Coast rackets, including the racing wire, which ran horse racing results to thousands of bookies across the country. Siegel pushed aside West Coast team boss Jack Dragna, who was told by Lansky and Luciano that if he didn’t come out and give Siegel the scars, bad things would happen to him quickly. Dragna did as she was told.

While in Hollywood, Siegel, who was a movie-star, was a famous lady, who sometimes slept with three or four stars at the same time. He has starred in films such as Clark Cable, Gary Cooper, George Raft and Cary Grant. The girls who slept were Jean Harlow, Wendy Barry, Marie McDonald, Virginia Hill and the Italian Countess Dorothy diFrasso. In 1939, at the behest of New York City Jewish mob boss Louis “Lepke” Buchalter, Siegel beat Harry “Big Greenie” Greenberg, who was singing like a canary to the feeders. Siegel was arrested for murder, but when his witness disappeared, he was not found guilty.

The notoriety of the Greenberg case damaged Siegel’s reputation near the Hollywood suburbs, so The Commission sent Siegel to Las Vegas, to scout the location of a hotel/casino he wanted to build. Siegel found a great location, and he encouraged guys from New York City, including his friend Lansky, to invest millions in a nightclub he named The Flamingo. The construction of The Flamingo was a disaster from the start. His insistence on only good causes raised $6 million, which angered his friends in New York City more than a little. In addition, there were concerns that Siegel may have been paying less to build on top, to support his work with women.

Opening night in December, 1946, was an unmitigated disaster. Siegel had moved the opening date from March 1947, when the hotel was still in the final stages of construction. Since The Flamingo was not in good shape (the lobby was covered in dirty linen), the Hollywood crowd stayed away, and within a few months, The Flamingo was worth more than a quarter of a million reds. Losing money on gambling was unheard of in the mob, so The Commission made the business decision that Siegel’s days on earth must be over. His old friend Lansky had no problem signing his childhood friend’s death certificate. Business is business and Siegel was bad at business.

On June 20, 1947, in Beverly Hill, Siegel was sitting on the couch in the living room of his friend Virginia Hill’s house, reading the Los Angeles Times. Suddenly, two gunshots from the open window hit Siegel in the face. One bullet hit his right cheek and lodged in his brain. The second punched him in the nose and pierced his right eye. The eye was found on the ground, fifteen feet from Siegel’s lifeless body.
