Music Review of Tonight by Franz Ferdinand

“Franz Ferdinand” is a four-piece Scottish indie rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. They are frontman Alex Kapranos (vocals and guitar), Nick McCarthy (guitar, keyboards and backing vocals), Bob Hardy (bass) and Paul Thomson (drums). Their musical styles include indie rock, post-punk revival, and dance rock. Franz Ferdinand takes its name from the historical figure Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

Franz Ferdinand is back after four years of waiting. On their third full-length tonight, I’d say this album is worth the wait! They are back with a wide range of music, they are experimenting with music and they are having fun! Franz Ferdinand is back to rock us!

Mellow starts tonight with the sexy “Ulysses”. Alex’s voice is intoxicating at a steady pace. The opening drum beats are very catchy, once the music starts you will fall in love with this track. Franz Ferdinand began to take small steps with Alex’s improvised vocals. I’ve never heard Alex sing like this, Ulysses is heady and sweaty. The music itself shows Franz Ferdinand’s willingness to add some new aspects to his sound. “Let’s get high, let’s get high…” Ferdinand has become the sexiest band on the dance floor!

“Turn It On” is another track that will leave the ladies on the dance floor begging for more. The bass and guitars on this track are amazing. In the chorus, the backing vocals really complement Alex’s vocals. Alex would go, “Even though I knew you’d turn it on…” The rest of Franz Ferdinand would go “Turn it on…” Franz Ferdinand was surprised to hear that! Turn It On is like a dance club song where the crowd never fails to move their bodies in appreciation of Franz Ferdinand’s music. Turn it on now with Franz Ferdinand!

“Know You Girls” features some repetitive catchy guitar and bass hooks. The music in Know You Girls is just awesome. The lyrics are cleverly crafted, “Kiss me where your eye won’t meet me, meet me where your mind won’t kiss me…” The chorus brings us another mesmerizing moment. It’s anthemic, sexy and catchy. Handclaps, guitar, organ and team-vocals are the climax here. “You girls never know, oh no, you girls never know, no girls never know, how you feel boy…” It’s loud and danceable! Dancing to rock tunes really takes a lot of energy!

“Send Him Away” is a soft danceable rock track where you will see Alex adopting a softer vocal style. In every Franz Ferdinand album, there will be songs that slow down, in other words, give your ears a break from all the hype going on throughout the album. Send Him Away managed to do just that. I find it sweet and cute with guitars that have a bit of a country element. In the final 1:12 minutes, Alex simply sings, “Oh, can’t you let me stay tonight…” until it fades out, while the guitar does the exact opposite as it gets bigger near the end.

“Twilight Omens” opens with an eerie string instrument that sounds like a banjo. It brings back the atmosphere of those classical horror movies. Overall Twilight Omen brings you back to the 60s/70s. The way Franz Ferdinand sings in this track is also a reflection of the olden days. Perhaps a journey back in time. Only this time, they do it with the influence of electronic music. Old times are rocking!

“Bite Hard” begins slowly with piano-playing and Alex’s powerful vocals. Once it gets up to speed, the guitars, bass and drums come in and it will wake you up right away! In between, I love the accompanying organ, which is in the right place at the right time to make the Bite Hard sound more perfect. The music also has a very heavy bass line which is very suitable on the dance floor. Finally, Franz Ferdinand keeps getting louder, “Well, I never, I never, I never know… I just wanted to taste their honey…” I think I’m up and dancing!

“What She Came For” is another track that features a heavy bass line, but this time at a mid-tempo pace. The track also has some electronic elements that Franz Ferdinand uses throughout Tonight. At times, without Alex’s voice, I find her to be cute and cheeky. “Wow, look out, know what she’s come for. Know what she’s come for. No question, no doubt. Wow, look out, know what she’s come for…” And the background music, if you pay attention. A faint organ sounds. What She Came For also features a vocal contribution by Rosie Wilson. Towards the end, Franz Ferdinand just go for maximum volume and rock hard with the guitar. I love this quirky cheeky yet rockable track.

“Live Alone” kind of reminds me of “You’re the reason I quit” from “You Could Have It So Much Better.” Sometimes, Gwen Stefani’s “What Are You Waiting For” just pops into my head. Franz Ferdinand’s use of synthesizers is also notable in this track. The guitar just turns on and off to keep up with the beat and rhythm of this track. And again, Live Alone is sung in a way that takes you back to the 60s/70s. The good old days are becoming popular these days. “You know I’ll be here, I’ll be here wishing I was there…” Nice contrast.

“Can’t Stop the Feeling” is funny! The music in this track is really catchy, especially the bass or perhaps the synthesizer-like instrument and the djembe-like sounding instrument that creates the atmosphere of African music. The music is funny catchy and the moment you hear it, you can’t help but smile lightly. The vocals on Can’t Stop Feeling are equally catchy. I love the part where Alex goes, “And you leave me here on my own, yeah you leave me here on the floor, you can’t feel it and you can’t feel it… anymore…” Just can’t stop listening Stop feeling can’t

“Lucid Dreams” sounds like a pure electronic track, very different from the non-album version. Franz Ferdinand is creating a new sound for himself here with Lucid Dreams, and it’s over seven minutes long. From what I hear here, this is clearly a remixed version of the non-album version. It goes straight to the chorus and climax without the usual build-up. The second half has pure music with heavy electronic elements and some guitar playing. Franz Ferdinand was reborn here.

Franz Ferdinand in “Dream Again” is a ballad that is soft and slow. At times, Alex can be heard singing in a robotic and echoey voice, “I live to dream again…” If you listen closely, there are no guitars in this track, just some beats created by synthesizers. Dream Again takes some time to grow into, even if you’re not into it, you’ll appreciate Dream Again. Sweet and beautiful track here.

Franz Ferdinand ends tonight with the acoustic “Katherine Kiss Me”. Alex sings his heart out here. He can be heard singing and playing the guitar. During a break, the piano comes in at the perfect time to complement Catherine’s Kiss Me. This track has a storytelling quality where you can clearly hear Alex’s voice singing and then you can figure out the meaning of the song. Franz Ferdinand delivered it in style and managed to close tonight’s chapter on a soft note.

Rating: Tonight proved that Franz Ferdinand are exploring new musical elements rather than reverting to their usual indie rock and post-punk revival. This time, Franz Ferdinand added electronic and slight African influences to his third full-length album. It’s always good to know that one of your favorite indie artists/bands is trying or creating something new and fresh. Franz Ferdinand has the ability to create new sounds and sound the same at the same time. When it comes to creating catchy and danceable moves, Franz Ferdinand has always been a force to be reckoned with. They evolve with each album and still manage to maintain their catchy trademark. If you’re a fan of Franz Ferdinand, you’ll be glad you’ve added the right band to your list of all-time favorite bands. If not, you should become one now! Another performance by Franz Ferdinand, 7.8 out of 10.

Stand-out tracks (my pick): Ulysses, Turn It On, Know You Girls, Send Him Away, Bite Hard, What She Came For, Can’t Stop Feeling and Catherine Kiss Me.
