What’s Wrong With Online Videos

Inspired by the launch of Bud.tv, I took a quick look at what’s available in online video. And the result is a disappointing mixed bag to say the least. It’s a lot harder than the video I can get from my DirecTV dish. How the average person is expected to make this technology work is difficult. After watching several videos, I came up with eight challenges:

First of all, my hope is to be as close as possible to the experience of YouTube users: you search for content on the home page, click on what you want, and the video starts playing within the browser available. I don’t want to download any media player, thank you very much – I already have drives full of them on my hard disk. I don’t need to search for the movie anymore – it should be easy to find whatever I want to watch.

Second, it should work with my configuration. I don’t want every second window to appear, because I might have pop-ups blocked, and I don’t want to let your video page be blank. I don’t want to change my browser settings to allow your video to play, because that might break something or open me up to other things.

Third, I want this to work in almost every browser and OS I use, but especially the Windows/IE combination (and while we’re looking, let’s make sure IE 7 doesn’t crash when I use it. to check your site again). Most of us use multiple browsers on multiple platforms, and we don’t want to start a specific PC just to view something. This goes against everything Microsoft and Apple are doing.

Fourth, I want a simple and easy way to “email this video to a friend.” One of the fun things about watching movies online is sharing it with 100 of your closest friends. Having said that, I want something reliable that you as a website owner don’t take all these emails and sell them to spammers in Moldova.

Fifth, I don’t want to go to extremes to deal with your subscription plan just to get your video. Life is too short, I already have a lot of passwords to deal with, and I can go somewhere else to get video content, so why bother trying to get through every gate you put up for me?

Sixth, I don’t care if the content is copyrighted or not. I know, this is heresy for a man who makes his life content, but I think a three-minute clip is a fair use. Get over it, you TV celebrities, and be glad that someone cares enough to film and post a video promoting your show. Now, there are different issues involved when you download an entire two-hour movie, but I’m talking about using shorter content here.

Seventh, if you’re going to stream, do it with proper caching so that the audio doesn’t get cut off and the image doesn’t shake. And if you want me to download something, the download shouldn’t take much longer than watching the actual video. But I would prefer streaming, because I don’t want to clutter up my hard disk with movies that I don’t watch more than once.

Finally, I want more than just a large stamp window to view. I don’t need to have full screen, DVD quality, but it would be nice to see something that comes close to filling my screen. It currently has a bandwidth problem, and many sites – including YouTube – do not display the full image.

Taking all these issues together makes for the most videos on the internet today. YouTube simply meets all the requirements, more or less, which is why the site has gathered such a following and why it has earned so many GoogleBucks. Let’s look at a few others and see where they are missing.

Netflix announced that they will start streaming movies for their customers soon, and I haven’t watched it myself. But as a very satisfied customer, I wish them the best. They have the best video search in the business, and they have the right idea for all other users. I believe he lives up to the magic.

Bud.tv, a new venture from our hometown company in St. Louis, uses a special pop-up player obtained from Akamai/Nine Systems. (One downside to this.) It has a registration system that checks my date of birth against a national database (no longer using Jan 1 as my default entry, which I recommend to discourage ID theft). They do this to make sure you’re over 21, but I didn’t see anything on the site that I wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing with my daughter. There are already people complaining about problems, and I can say that they will remove this system soon.

Bud.tv also falls down in search – you go through a shortcut which is now a shortcut but when the site starts working it won’t work. I don’t think that many users will tolerate this method for a long time, and maybe not return or only return to one or two methods that are compatible with them (short videos from TriggerStreet.com were very successful for me). They play all their videos, and the audio plays multiple times on my DSL connection. Since the site just launched this week, I can’t say if I’ll be a regular visitor.

An example of a movie site I won’t go back to is CinemaNow. They want IE, download their player, and it usually hurts me.

One channel I’ve been enjoying is Amanda Congdon, on ABCnews.com. I have been looking for it in iTunes, because it was difficult to find the content using the Web icon. So at the same time I’m breaking a few of my rules, but I see iTunes as a pre-existing program. Each week’s videos are about five minutes long, and Congdon is cute, funny, and educational all rolled into one. Downloading is done in the background (one of the advantages of having iTunes as your player) and the quality is first-rate, which you’d expect from a TV network.

So as you can see we have a way to go before the Internet video can be as easy as punching a few buttons on the remote and watching normal TV. Well, maybe we’re about to cross the line – getting my DirecTV remote to turn on and off all my social media devices in the living room isn’t easy, and I’m still not working as well as my wife would like. Maybe people who don’t open video plug-ins aren’t all bad after all.
