If The Answer Is No, Just Say So!
If someone asks me for a quote or idea and then decides not to use my work, why not tell me?
If someone is considering donating one of my packages, but doesn’t think they have time to prepare, why not let me know?
If someone has talked to me about buying some of my books to give to their clients or members, but they don’t think the money is worth it, why not let me know?
If the answer to my question is no, why don’t people say that?
It’s amazing to me that people think it’s okay or acceptable to leave someone hanging if the answer is wrong. I, personally, would rather know that the sale is dead or the job is dead, than surprise or hope. Sometimes the interviewer may be waiting for the answer themselves or they may be too busy to answer too much to get a response. If so I would appreciate a quick post about it.
From my experience there are several reasons why people will not respond if the answer is negative. Here are my thoughts on the matter:
· If you don’t want to say no, remember that someone is waiting. Put their concerns ahead of your discomfort and give them a solution.
• If you feel that it is wrong to say no, ask yourself if it is worth ignoring the person you have given hope to.
· If you haven’t gotten around to making a decision, make one or tell someone you are expecting that you will make a decision on a certain day. Then, for goodness sake, meet the deadline.
· If you are waiting for other people, explain the situation to the person who is looking at you for an answer. But don’t use this reason as an excuse to cover up a lesser reason.
For those who are waiting for an answer, we don’t know whether to “remind” you to answer or just think that the answer is wrong. Either way, you’re probably hurting yourself because if we think the answer is wrong, but you just need a reminder, we won’t be reminding you. Or if we think you need a reminder we can trouble you.
As a business owner, I have to be mature and strong enough not to hear no. If the answer is negative, tell me because I would like to be free to move on to other opportunities.
If the answer is no, it’s okay to say so!
