Democratizing the Web – Adventures in Joomla
How Open Source Software Helps the Web: My Fun with Joomla.
Read on if you want to know how an inexperienced web developer was able to create the RSS Powered News Supersite ANewRelevance.com.
While you are showering, lightning flashes and you have a great idea for this website (my best inspiration always seems to reveal itself in the shower). The problem is: 1) you don’t have the skills or know how to build and/or 2) you don’t have the budget to build. It’s a common problem, your best idea for your website is wasted. This summer I faced the same problem.
First, a little background.
I am a self-proclaimed storyteller, knowledge and information. I always want to know what is going on in the world and I always want to learn. In the past, this meant a lot of time hunched over my keyboard with the TV in the background. This was hour after hour of Olberman, Maddow, Matthews, O’Reily, Hannity, Colbert, Stewart, SportsCenter…you get the picture.
I got married. That’s what started this whole journey. I was single with plenty of time to make waves for my man on the road. When I got married, I had to leave these friends, not to mention many of my things that didn’t destroy my old home, behind. The funny thing is, my wife likes watching TV more than I do. The problem is, they are very different types of programs: Bones, Houses, any CSI and ANY reality shows. That’s when the question came up: How can I know what’s going on in the world if I can’t watch my shows? Removing my software is like asking Derek Jeter to hit a game-winning home run without a thumb. These were dark times.
I went to the internet.
I thought that everything I wanted was out there, not wrapped up in the pretty package I’ve known all my years. Every day starts the same: start ‘pute, log in, fire up Firefox and start searching. I went from place to place, trying to collect everything I could about what was happening around the world: Drudge, Espn, TMZ, Fark, TechCrunch, etc.
Then came the idea:
What if I put all the top topics on my favorite sites on one page? Or better yet, put all the articles I need on one page?
Then came the problem:
I’m a web developer but I’m not a coder. It is very functional.
Then it came down to reality:
I can put together a great website, but I always dread the day I have to learn how to sit back and make things happen. A regular page, sure. A place of strength, well… hard times call for action.
The investigation began.
And its purpose was twofold: 1) How is news delivered on the Internet? and 2) What are the best delivery platforms? I had to find a way to create a mobile site that would not only collect stories, but display them in a way that was easy to use, easy to navigate and give me access to the places I included. Of course, I didn’t know how to do this, but after doing some research I found that there are many options, including open source software, that would meet my needs.
More about open source.
Open source software, in short, is software that provides out-of-the-box functionality, is flexible and, best of all, free. You may have heard of others: Ruby on Rails, Drupal, WordPress, Joomla. They provide rich functionality for things like website development, content management and web publishing. If you’re interested in decorating, thousands of themes (page layouts) are available for download or purchase. In terms of functionality, hundreds of plugins and modules are also available. If you think about it, there’s probably a feature or plugin for it. These downloads are also available at no cost. Basically, you can build on your own property which would cost thousands if you hire a builder.
With so many options, how do I choose?
It depends on what purpose you want your website to serve. What do you want your website to do? Who is your audience? If you want to build a community, you may want to go the Drupal or Joomla route. Looking to create ecommerce? Both offer solid options for ecommerce integration. You want to publish your work on the Internet, WordPress is the best solution. The important thing is that you have to take the time to research, find references, and choose the one that best suits your needs. For my needs, I chose Joomla.
Currenlty, there is a big debate about which software is better: Joomla or Drupal. Honestly, I say “sixth of one half of the others”. They all “can attract a cat”, they just do it differently. In my experience, Joomla has been the best solution for me for many reasons:
– With no experience coming in, the learning curve wasn’t too bad.
– Installation (remote server) does not hurt.
– The admin/user interface is easy to use.
– Support group is stable.
– The available plugins and modules are extensive and well documented.
If you choose Joomla, you can be sure that you will not be left out in the cold. The community of users and developers is large and continues to grow. It’s a decent program, and from everything I’ve read, it should last a while.
The next step.
So I had decided on software. I installed it, chose a theme, configured the database and backend, and selected modules and plugins that provided the functionality I needed… except for news. This was the next big step. The reason I got into this mess in the first place. I wanted news to be delivered, edited and posted in real time. With a little more research I found my answer.
RSS, often translated as “Really Simple Syndication” or “Rich Site Summary”, is a web site used to publish regularly updated content such as blogs, articles, audio and video. Sites provide these feeds to us so that, instead of having to check the site frequently, updates can be delivered to you automatically. Basically they “keep you in the loop”. There are many programs that can provide you with these feeds on your desktop. In my case, I needed to find a way to send them through my website. This was difficult because most of the options I found only had a small amount of food (1-3). In the past, they weren’t open source, which meant that even if I had feeds going through my site, I couldn’t edit them. wow! Some searching has led me to…
Google AJAX Feed API
Now looking from the Mountain Top…
I have to say it feels good. It would be foolish of me not to give due warning where warning is due. This project was very difficult and took a lot of patience, hard work and MANY hours. But in the end, a small town kid with no programming knowledge was able to create the environment he dreamed of one morning while taking a shower. There is a revolution happening in the world of internet: if you can dream it you can make it happen. All the tools are available and all it costs is your time. Open source software is democratizing the Internet. Be brave and all the best.
