A Comparison on the Best Bluetooth Headsets for Listening to Music on the iPad

At first our goal was to compare each type of Bluetooth headset to the headphones available. As we use headphones in our daily lives, we have come to realize that some headphones are better designed for certain tasks. Designing a product for a single use often results in underestimating the needs of another use. This is similar to building a car. If you want something quick that can go from 0-60 in 4 seconds; maybe it’s not getting the best gas mileage, or hauling three kids around town. The bottom line is that those who want the best headphones for listening to music, or watching videos, have a different product profile than mobile warriors who want to make VOIP calls (more on this topic at the end).

For this product comparison, we’re looking at the best Bluetooth headphones for listening to music and watching movies on your iPad. Although we emphasized the quality of music and video playback, almost all Bluetooth headphones have built-in microphones and VOIP capabilities. Next week we’ll have a comparison of Bluetooth headsets designed for voice chat that are compatible with the iPad, and play stereo audio.

Our favorite factors are sound quality, fit/comfort, battery life, features, and features. A lot of weight and our scoring was given to good quality (about 40% of the weight); and the other 4 groups are given equally distributed measures in the remaining part. All recommended Bluetooth headphones have been tested with iPad 1 and iPad 2 running iOS versions as of 4.2. Going back to our car analogy, you wouldn’t expect a cheap car like the Ford Focus to match the performance of a luxury car like a Ferrari. With that in mind, we’ve broken down our picks for the best iPad Bluetooth headphones for a given price.

One last point before we get started there is no such thing as a Bluetooth headset made just for the iPad. So if you’re browsing the web, or walking the aisles of Best Buy looking for products with the words “Pad Bluetooth Headsets” written on the packaging, narrow down your choices. When buying a Bluetooth headset or headphones for your iPad, just make sure it’s a headset or A2DP capable. The Bluetooth headset you buy for your iPad must work with your mobile phone and a Bluetooth-enabled computer.

The best Bluetooth headphones for your iPad under $40: Arctic Sound P311

Arctic Sound P311 (MSRP $39.99)

In summary:

Our winner for the best Bluetooth headset under $40 is the Arctic Sound P311. If you are an expert, the name will sound familiar as Arctic Sound is part of Arctic Cooling, a Swiss company that manufactures CPU coolers and computer accessories. While the MSRP of the P311 is $39.95, you can find this headset online for around $30. It does everything you want from a theme at a good price. We preferred this unit to the more expensive models from Motorola and Sony. The sound quality is indistinguishable from the Motorola and Sony models but what won us over was the amazing battery life and design. In addition to testing with an iPad, we were able to connect this title to a PlayStation 3, a laptop (MAC & PC), an Android Phone, an iPhone, and a Nokia Phone without a problem.

Sound Quality

We paired the Arctic Sound P311 with an Android, iPhone, and Nokia phone to test the audio quality during phone calls. Our friends on the other hand understood us well. Clarity was excellent and there were no lags or stutters in the conversation. For VOIP and cellular pairing, the P311 includes an integrated hidden microphone, built-in voice processor, and Advanced Clear Voice Capture (CVC) technology. The latter is the best way to describe noise canceling technology. While the microphone sounds great during phone calls, the noise cancellation is not up to par with high-end headsets like Jawbone or Plantronic headsets. If you want to talk to someone in a noisy place like Starbucks during the morning rush hour, the background noise will come out of the conversation better than a high-end headset.

For music and video playback, the sound was excellent for a device of this class. The music was loud and clear at a high level. Drivers that are built with high fidelity are able to reproduce sound at low frequencies without cracks or crevices. Bass sounds smooth compared to high-end headphones and surround speakers. These aren’t headsets to change the sound on your MacBook Pro, but if you’re watching Netflix on your iPad or listening to an app on your iPod, the sound quality is excellent.

Fit/Comfort

Weighing only 2.5 ounces, the P311 is extremely light. Closed ear cups give us the best comfort possible throughout the day without getting tired or irritated. Some of our readers may not like the behind the ear design but we found this if you plan to use these headphones at work, as they won’t tangle your hair like high end headsets.

Appearance

One of the most useful features is that the right earphone has 5 buttons that control other settings. They allow you to answer the phone, change the volume and advance/pause the music. The device you connect the headphones to should allow this but we’ve found that most do. If paired with a mobile phone and there is an incoming call, Inter-Call-Manager will play a ringtone on the headset. The music will pause and resume when you finish playing. Connecting to my iPad was no problem and the controls worked for panning, jumping, rewinding, and pausing. Antic Sound P311 does not support multipoint Bluetooth.

Battery life

The Arctic Sound P311 has a rechargeable 400mAH lithium polymer battery similar to the lithium polymer technology used by Apple’s iPad and MacBook. The manufacturer claims up to 20 hours of listening/talking time for the Arctic Silver but you can only achieve that time if you are not practical. If we talked on the headset for an hour and spent the rest of the time listening to average music, we got 12-14 hours per charge. Although it was not the 20 hours claimed by the manufacturer, this was enough for a full day’s work and extended the battery life of other headphones. Mobile fans will love that the Arctic Sound P311 charges the headset via micro USB instead of a proprietary design. If you have a BlackBerry, you can use an AC Adapter or USB cable to charge the headset leaving one less thing to move around. The washing time from a dead battery is about 4 hours. A USB cable is provided to plug into a computer or iPad AC adapter.

Make Good:

The Arctic Sound P311 comes with a sturdy nylon case so it easily slips into your bag, purse, or briefcase. The headphones themselves are made from hard plastic. Due to its curved design, it can be damaged if you apply too much force on the hinges. This does not make the headphones fragile as the earphones were accidentally dropped several times without damage.

Bluetooth compatibility: Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR, A2DP, AVRCP, HSP, HFP 1.5

The best Bluetooth headphones for your iPad under $100: Plantronics Backbeat 903+

Plantronics Backbeat 903+ (MSRP $99.99)

In summary:

The Plantronics Backbeat 903+ is an upgrade to Plantronics’ best-selling 903/906 series. The Backbeat 903+ was released last year and incorporates new Bluetooth standards. The main feature of this headset is the Arctic Sound P311 with multi-function Bluetooth technology. What multipoint allows you to do is pair two Bluetooth devices with one headset. As long as your device supports multipoint, you can sync your phone to the Backbeat 903+ while streaming audio from your iPad. Most new phones support multipoint including Android and Blackberry platforms. Both iPhone and iPad support multipoint as long as you are using iOS version 4.1 and above.

Why is multipoint so important? If you have multipoint, you will never miss a call if you are listening to music on your iPad or iPod! If your iPhone is ringing while you’re blasting Metallica on your iPad, the Backbeat 903+ multipoint support will pause the music and notify you of an incoming call. One touch on the Backbeat 903+ allows you to answer the phone without physically answering.

We recommend not paying MSRP by searching online for the best deals. We bought our Backbeat 903+ on Amazon for $69.99.

Sound Quality

In terms of sound quality during calls, the Plantronics Backbeat 903+ is superior to the Arctic Sound P311. This is a result of the high-quality sound insulation and windshield. The headset has two microphones instead of just one. Both microphones are well positioned to be protected from direct wind. Plantronics calls their noise canceling technology AudioIQ2. Basically what happens is that the microphone picks up your voice and cuts out the background noise to deliver a high-quality conversation on the phone.

The Backbeat 903+ has rich and clear sound, and can stream music, videos, and audio programs from your iPad. The headphone has extra bass that provides more depth, and a more earthy feel than the P311. Although the Backbeat 903+ has noise-canceling technology, it should be noted that it’s only for audio and not for music.

Fit/Comfort

Like the Arctic Sound headset, the Plantronics 903+ is a back-of-the-ear design with close-fitting straps. Each earpiece adjusts three ways to match.

Appearance

The Backbeat 903+ features a unique technology called OpenMic that lets you hear what’s going on around you with the touch of a button. Backbeat also supports one touch that lets you start/stop calls, and control music functions like volume and pause/play. Voice notifications tell you when the battery is low, when a call comes in, and when you drop the phone. You can also check the headset battery level on your iPhone with the built-in app. And as mentioned earlier, the Backbeat 903+ supports multipoint to allow you to connect your mobile phone and iPad simultaneously.

Battery life

The battery life provides a talk time of 7 hours. Standby time is 7 Hours. Charging time is 3 hours and charging mode is micro USB. An AC adapter is provided.

Build Quality

The Backbeat is made of high-strength plastic designed to withstand more abuse than a normal head. If you are an athlete or want to use the Backbeat in the gym, you will love its durability and flexibility. The headphones are foldable and a soft protective case is provided.
