The Fundamentals of Software Testing
“The Fundamentals of Software Testing” is the first part of the ISEB Foundation course and testing syllabus. ISEB recommends that Foundation students spend 20% of their study time on the Fundamentals course. This is also the opening chapter in the official ISEB Software Testing manual.
Understanding the fundamentals of software testing (ST) is critical to achieving success according to ISEB technical standards. But, what exactly are these “basics”, and what do you need to know to pass the ISEB Foundation exam?
Why is it important?
According to Peter Morgan (independent examiner and member of the ISEB Accreditation and Examination team), an unreasonably large proportion of IT systems fail to meet expectations – or fail to function at all – due to insufficient ST before release.
ST cannot guarantee software problems or failures, but it can reduce the risk of errors once the software is used. To understand why ST is important, it is important to consider the causes and consequences of IT system failures, and the important role that testing plays in Quality assurance.
ISEB Foundation Scholarships focus on five key areas:
o Possible consequences of failure of IT systems;
o Causes of software failure;
o Why ST is important;
o ST versus Quality Assurance;
o Company introduction.
What is ST?
ST is a method of detecting defects in the product before it is released; this includes errors in the software and its processes, as well as any differences between what the code is supposed to do and what it actually does.
The ISEB ST Foundation Examination requires students to:
o To know the objectives of ST;
o Understand how these objectives work in the design, implementation and support of software (including the difference between testing and ‘debug’, and the different uses of static and dynamic testing).
More information
The ISEB curriculum introduces students to 7 principles of software testing:
o Testing may show that there are problems, but not that problems don’t exist.
o Testing involves only a small number of samples, and is not comprehensive.
o The earlier a problem is found, the less expensive it will be to fix.
o Errors are limited to specific areas (such as mechanical problems, or operator inattention). These areas can be specifically monitored by testers.
o Multiple tests, performed repeatedly, have limited results.
o The type, design and focus of testing varies depending on the program being tested.
o Testing that shows no bugs does not guarantee that the software is bug-free.
Basic procedure
Software testing is not just a matter of checking documentation or running a program to check for errors. To ensure that the appropriate tests are used correctly and to return the value of the resources invested, it is necessary for the program testers to do five important things, which the ISEB ST guidelines combine to form the ST method:
1. Preparation and control of tests
a. Test preparation defines what will be tested, how it will be tested, and who will know when the test is completed.
b. Test management is an iterative process that compares progress to the plan, and adjusts the plan as needed.
2. Testing and production
a. Test analysis considers what is to be tested, and how these measurements should be included in the test.
b. The test design describes the expected results of the test, so that testers can easily identify when a problem occurs.
3. Try to try and do
Implementation represents the most visible testing activity, and includes test installation, test data generation, test pricing and analysis of test results.
4. Monitoring the output and reporting
The “exit criteria” test (which is based on the “Preparation and control test”) indicates that the test is over.
5. Tasks to close the exam
o Ensure that all documents are completed correctly
o Close and save the test environment, builds and testware
o Provide test equipment to maintenance team
o Literary studies
Experimental psychology
Selecting the right person(s) to conduct the test, and communicating the results of the test to developers, requires a basic understanding of the psychology of testers and developers.
ISEB’s guidance provides a ‘free’ hierarchy – that is, a list of people who can try the program, adjusted according to how they think they will not leave the development work:
o Coders
o Members of the same social group as legislators
o A different group within the same organization
o Another organization
There are different pros and cons for people at different levels in the program’s test administration. For example, a programmer may be able to solve a problem quickly, but may not be able to see the problem in the first place.
In addition to the independence/removal of testers from the software development process, it is important to consider how testers can communicate test results to developers. The ISEB Software Testing Foundation exam requires students to explain how to provide positive feedback on errors, for example:
o Encourage giving good, not saying wrong;
o Test reports do not go to people but to things;
o Discuss problems openly, and try to understand each other;
o At the end of the discussion, make sure both parties understand what you agreed to.
Summary
Basic understanding is essential to pass the ISEB Software Testing Foundation exam. During the ISEB Foundation certification course, approximately two and a half hours should be devoted to learning what testing is, why it is important, and the basic principles and techniques that lead to successful test performance.
