7 Steps How to Become a Citizen of Caribbean Country
Part 1 – The concept of migration
In the past few years the Dominican Republic has become home to many foreign investors or entire families coming here from abroad.
What are the main reasons to choose the Dominican Republic?
- A very stable economy
- Unlimited business opportunities in manufacturing, services, tourism, import and export
- Nice warm weather all year round
- Changeable and in many places still beautiful virgin nature
- Friendly and helpful locals
Step 2 – Prepare the documents to submit your application
What documents are required to apply for a Dominican residency and work permit?
- Medical examination (must be done here in Santo Domingo by Immigration doctors)
- A complete copy (all pages) of your passport
- Three photos of yourself (front and side)
- Notarized, legally translated into Spanish and a valid Birth Certificate
- A Dominican citizen required by the authorities as a personal guarantee for your application
- Dominican Republic address
Step 3 – Migration Process
It is recommended that you start this process as soon as you arrive in the country and settle, because you can start your migration during the tourist visa period. The first step is to visit the Immigration office with all the application papers, you will pass the medical examination (blood test and X-ray). When accepting your file at the Immigration office, you will receive four registration numbers (which is the number of your file in the Dominican Immigration system) and based on this number you can immediately start working or doing business in the Dominican Republic because you are considered a person applying for a job.
Advice! It is better to bring with you to speak Spanish, the staff in the Immigration Office are really nice and mostly they can speak English with you, but with Spanish you really speed things up.
Part 4 – Settling in a new country
Now you have time to settle in and get comfortable in your new home.
Because the Dominican Republic is an island, it has its own problems – reliable electricity or water is still not available. When you rent or buy a house or building always ask for additional supplies: Planta (gas generator), Inversor (backup power in batteries – like UPS) and Tinaco (water tank on top of the house). When the power goes down for 2-3 hours, it’s good to have one backup to make it work (light, fridge, TV, etc.).
Advice! Get a local to help you with the apratment or house ads, they will get better prices.
Section 5 – Private company
The time to complete your settlement varies from 3 to 4 months from the time you submit your application. You can use this time to open a Dominican business company and bank account, obtain necessary licenses for specific businesses, such as importing or exporting pharmaceuticals or other government-controlled products.
What do you need to open a business company and bank account?
- According to the new Business Law of the Dominican Republic 2 people as company owners (before there were seven people)
- A copy of your passport or a new Dominican ID “cedula”
- Dominican Republic address for your company
Section 6 – Settlement (citizenship)
You are living in a new place and culture, you have a new life, a business company and new experiences. Do you love the Dominican Republic and want to be a citizen with all the rights and benefits of this country?
You can apply for Dominican citizenship most of the time after two years of obtaining a residency permit but the big advantage is that you don’t have to live in the country all the time. There are other things that have been confirmed by the Dominican authorities, for example if you are a foreign investor, you can apply for Dominican citizenship in about a year.
What will you get with citizenship?
- Full citizenship and not the “economic” citizenship offered in many Caribbean and Central American countries.
- The same rights as Dominican citizens with one exception – you cannot be elected President of the country
- Free visa to visit for example Israel, Japan, South Korea, Uruguay, Argentina, Honduras, Peru, Ecuador and others.
- Your Dominican ID card “cédula de identidad” will be changed to a new one, just like every Dominican citizen.
- New Dominican Birth Certificate
- Your Dominican passport
Step 7 – The last step is your first step to becoming a citizen of the Dominican Republic
Does it seem like a difficult process for you? But really, it’s easy, all you have to do is trust the experts, who will be happy to help you in any area, any advice or help you need.
