Got A Cold – Should You Work Out?
A recent study sponsored by the American College of Sports Medicine suggests that moderate exercise when you have a cold does not affect the severity or duration of the symptoms.
It’s a very different idea that exercise and fitness can reduce the risk of getting sick, but nothing has been written about whether exercising while you have the flu can reduce or worsen symptoms.
The flu affects us all, and most Americans get it up to six times a year, but can exercising when you’re not feeling well increase or decrease your ability to fight the flu, and reduce your symptoms?
The study, led by Thomas G. Weidner, Ph.D., Ball State University in Munice Indiana, included 50 eligible volunteer students, who were randomly divided into two groups: exercising and not exercising. Each volunteer was injected with cold germs, followed for ten days.
The participants kept daily exercise logs. The exercise group works by running, cycling or using a treadmill for 40 minutes every day, at no more than seventy percent of their energy (measured by heart rate monitoring).
After completing the study and after analyzing the exercise data, the severity of the symptoms, and the specific measurements of the weight of the mucous membrane, it was not shown that there was no significant difference in the severity of the symptom or the duration in the exercise group or in their counterparts who did not work.
The study showed that moderate exercise does not worsen cold symptoms or suppress the immune system. It seems that even a small amount of energy is not enough to change the immune response.
Readers beware, vigorous physical activity such as heavy lifting or vigorous exercise has been shown to significantly affect the immune system during the flu or any respiratory illness.
Indications for Use Instructions:
Runny nose, sneezing, scratchy throat only Safe for low-intensity exercise.
Fever, dry cough, stomach ulcers, vomiting, diarrhea Unacceptable exercise, resume exercise after a cold, or illness.
