Where Is My Hand? An Inspiring Encounter With A Humble Leader In A Great Position
So I walked out of the hall feeling like a drug addict and going up in the air like a balloon. I had just finished the exam and my friends were waiting outside for me to explain what I had. Scattered like sheep without a shepherd, perhaps discussing questions, I knew what I had to do – gather them together – and that’s what I did. Then, I started talking to them, it’s been a long time since I surprised them with my witty and funny talk. They listen in silence as the sentences fall smoothly from my mouth word by hook, deep and happily swallow every word as if it were a quote from a motivational book or a bestseller to be linked. Was he memorizing my words as an inspirational poem in a poetry collection?
When I was lost among them, I felt like Jesus Christ because no one would know that I was their leader. Less than three minutes after I started, like a shock of bad news, I was interrupted when I was told someone was calling me. I left after receiving permission from my people; He didn’t complain, he gave it to me quickly. When I got there, I met four men standing and one of them, tall, dark, clean shaven, very good looking in a suit who spoke:
Me (bowing down): Good morning sir.
Man: How are you? Are you a Class Rep.?
Me: Yes sir. (I said it boldly, not afraid of their numbers or their appearance.)
Father: What do you want here? (He asked without showing cruelty.)
Me: I’m giving them more, that’s why we’re here.
The man: But you could have gone to an empty hall to do that instead of staying here. You can collect them in the hall where you wrote your exam. Because it looks to me like you’re plotting or something. (So he said softly.)
Me (Smile is a gentle joke or call it a lie): No sir, with the short knowledge I have of them, it won’t take long.
Man: He is short. Good. But when I come and find you here, I’ll take some because then it’s not short anymore. (At the same time, I saw that it was a big issue that he just fought with without getting angry.)
Me: No problem sir.
Man: Okay then.
Me: Thank you sir. (He waved at me and left the bus he entered.)
It was like that! He shook me and I couldn’t feel my hand anymore! I quickly finished the meeting with my people and they dispersed. But in a short time I still couldn’t feel my hand. This is not literature and fiction, it happened. I thought that eventually I would get over it; but hell no, far from it. What did he do to me? Whether my hands froze on me or lost the life that was passing through the moment I shook him, I could not say. Could there be any scientific explanation for that? Maybe or maybe not. It was as if he had put traditional medicine on his hand and when I shook him or shook me, however you put it, the magic began to take hold of me. Hello! Can you help me? I said I can’t feel my hand anymore. Where is my hand?
Can you tell me to see a doctor? Or should you report the case to the police? My friends wanted to touch and shake but I politely refused. However, don’t worry about it. Thank you team for your concern. I really appreciate it. If I go to the doctor, it will be a useless waste of time and if I go to the police, they will find me guilty. Why? It’s simple: my thinking made it so, my thinking made me feel like I lost my hand. But of course I will be justified in thinking about my answer. “Why?” You can ask. The reason was that at the same time he waved at me and turned to leave, one of his followers whispered to me and said, “Try to finish what you’re saying quickly in five minutes and make sure you both get out of this place. He’s the VC.”
Oh, now you know, but please hold on there. Don’t rush to say anything until you answer this question: if you were a student, wouldn’t you feel the same way? I lost only my hand; can’t you lose your…could it be a headache? No problem mate, just kidding. But it is true. I am not just creating an unnecessary picture in your mind or writing nonsense stories to waste your time or amuse you. This is where I go: the simplicity of Prof. Adeniyi S. Gbadegesin, the Vice Chancellor to me that day surprised me. It was hard for me to get out of my mind how he explained to me that he doesn’t like our home there (because of the student protests that were disrupting the academic activities at that time) but without hurting me. This short meeting turned out to be one of those short stories that filled me with new blood of inspiring lessons that I couldn’t resist writing.
Frank A. Clark said, “Everyone strives to achieve great things but we forget that life is full of small things.” Little things like a smile, kindness, humility, and the list goes on. Julia A. Fletcher Carney (1823-1908) said, “A little drop of water, a little sand, makes a mighty sea and a happy world. So, our little mistakes make a big sin. Little acts of kindness, little words of love, make our world Eden, like heaven. In fact, a Saudi Arabian proverb says, “Sweet words can lure even a snake from its nest.” I like Spencer Kimball’s definition of humility, which says, “Humility is a kingdom without a crown.” That’s the most consistent motivational quote I’ve ever seen, and that’s what they set out to play. I can only repeat people’s words. I want to finish here but before I tell you about Mother Teresa that says, “Let no one come to you without leaving well and happily.”
In addition, he did not ask one of his people while sitting in the bus, to tell me and my people to leave the place. He came down and asked me to come. He didn’t put me in a pocket, he didn’t look down on me or talk to me in a harsh and cruel way. If he had done it very well, no one would have blamed him, he had every right to do so because of the high position he had. But no, he thought otherwise. He gave me a golden opportunity to enter into his presence and refreshed me with the fragrance of his humility that filled the whole air.
I’m not cheating here; I’m just saying frankly how I felt about the less than two minute meetings where I learned over two hundred tons of lessons. He didn’t insult or belittle a guy like me. This is a leadership style that I have cultivated over the years and I feel on top of the world when I see it being done for me. It is a quality that is rare among top leaders. This is one of the signs of true leaders that I have read in books and many free articles on the internet.
Thank God I saw one from the Vice Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria that day. It was a day I will never forget – Thursday, December 1, 2011, around 11:15 AM, I can’t imagine how I will feel when I shake the President; I have an example with VC. This does not mean that I would not like to shake Mr. President; I love to do that but mostly I want to be and I will be the President of this great nation. Just one fact: I still can’t feel my hand!
“A great man shows his greatness in the way he treats lesser men.”
