Flying Is An Experience All Its Own – A Book Review
Do you come from a flying family? Have you ever thought about flying for money or getting your pilot’s license so you can experience the best? Are you looking forward to having a flying car in your life? Well, if that’s the case, or if you love airplanes, I have a great idea, a great book that I believe you should read. No, it’s not a new book, and it’s not just one book, it’s actually many books in one collection – 75 stories in all, each easy to read and just the right length. The name of the book is:
“Men In the Air – The Best Flight Stories Of All Time From Greek Mythology To The Space Age,” by Brandt Aymar and Walter J. Boyne, Wing Books, New York, New York, 1990, pp 597, ISBN: 0- 517-14656-8.
The book is related to the theme as the first chapter is the famous story of Daedallus and Icarus, Greek Mythology of father and son flying with their artificial wings and the son gets closer to the Sun with wax on his wings. dissolves and falls to his death unable to stand. Then we have several science fiction stories including one by Isaac Asimov; “Saturn Is Returning” and then the book starts to be a very human driven story and the best I might add.
Before manned aircraft, there are stories of dirigibles, balloons and blimps – then the Wright Brothers, Lindbergh, and the design and story of Sikorski who developed the first helicopters. I found the news about airmail, archives, air races and early air shows very interesting.
This book is not controversial as it is about the first world war flying in Europe. World War II aviation stories are extensive and include stories of pilots on both sides of the war; Japan, Allied Forces, US Airmen, Luftwaffe, and Russia. There are stories about pilots in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War.
The last article is about female pilots – a must read to inspire future pilots – I recommend reading all the articles there. Interestingly, there are also interesting stories about flying and weather – and Hurricane Hunters.
This book has major sections on prop Age, jet Age and Space Age. Our famous Apollo Astronauts have stories to tell, gut-wrenching, terrifying tales. I think you will love this book as much as I do. Be Great – Don’t procrastinate.
