Career Book Review: Job Searching After 50 by Carol Silvis – A Mature Worker’s Competitive Advantage

Long-term unemployment is any person who has been unemployed for six months or more. Currently, 5.8 million Americans define that category; And among them, there are many people above 50 years of age. Older adults face unique challenges when seeking employment.

Course Technology publishes a variety of professional, reference and technology titles. is one of his current publications Job Hunting After 50 Carol A. By Silvis.

Silvis has a master’s degree in adult education and is assistant director and department chair at the Pennsylvania Business Institute. She also presents workshops and seminars for schools, businesses and professional organizations.

Eight chapters comprise Silvis’ message. Below are highlights from each topic to help you find a job as an adult worker:

Skills and Qualifications

The job search process begins with matching your unique abilities to a company in need. Determine your purpose for working. It will guide your employment whether full time or part time. Focus beyond your age on how your workplace, transferable and life skills meet the employer’s needs. Consider your personal characteristics, such as enthusiasm and forward-thinking, versus the old ways of the mature worker. Only share relevant capabilities vs. List every duty you have held in your 30-year career. Too much experience can be a deterrent to employers. This is the age of lifelong learning. Continue your skills by taking classes, workshops, earning a degree or certification, participating in online webinars.

Resumes and cover letters

No career assessment is complete without looking at the resume and cover letter. For older workers, key elements for a successful approach include:

  • Accomplishments vs Duties. Highlight your unique value-added accomplishments at companies you’ve worked for, versus just duties.
  • contact information. Provide any links to your professional online presence, including blogs and/or websites.
  • Digital Resume. Write a targeted resume for each desired position. Use industry-specific keywords to help with search engine optimization (SEO), increasing your chances of being read by someone.
  • Education and training. If you earned your degree more than 20 years ago, omit your graduation date.
  • Eligibility Summary Vs. objective. A qualification summary highlights your key achievements, skills, education and personal characteristics. This is a brief paragraph or bulleted list that employers can easily scan; and provides more insight than the objective.

Always include a well-written cover letter. This increases your chances of attracting the employer’s attention; And provides an opportunity to expand on inappropriate information, including salary history.

Technology

Today, computer skills are essential in the workplace and in your job search. Increasingly, employers require such competencies to hire; And many available jobs are now only posted online. Research the company’s website to determine its key players. Use industry-related keywords in online applications, cover letters, and resumes. “This is not the time to say you’re too old to use technology or that it’s useless,” says Silvis.

Now, social networking is an essential component of your job search. Maintain a professional presence on three major platforms: Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Many employers use these sites as recruiting tools; And mastering it can increase your chances of being sought after for industry-related positions.

Networking

Networking is a ubiquitous term; And the need for it is often underestimated, especially with older workers. “It’s important to build a solid support system for job seekers, especially as they age,” Silvis says.

build and nurture long-term relationships; And you’re networking. This is also a two-way process. Before creating a contact list, define your networking goals. The most successful networks include a mix of personal and professional contacts. Think of everyone you know, including your dentist, hair stylist, post office clerk, etc. Choose enthusiastic, optimistic people. Job hunting is often a numbers game; And it’s never too late to start or resume networking.

Attitude, appearance and energy

It’s not easy to maintain a positive attitude when you’re losing your job before you retire; But you, especially as a mature worker.

It’s hard to hear that you need to update your appearance, but it can be a hindrance in your job search. Comb-overs and outdated hairstyles on balding men can also indicate archaic skills. Consider getting a makeover at a department store or salon. It will not only enhance your looks but also boost your confidence.

Employers look for candidates who will fit into the workplace and bring positive energy.

Mistakes made by over 50 job seekers

  • Failure to keep up with other generations. Today’s workplace is multi-generational, with four different generations working together. As an adult worker, you should ask yourself how would you feel about being interviewed by someone your child’s or grandchild’s age? Can you communicate as a colleague rather than a parent?
  • No desire to change. A younger interviewer may worry that an older worker is stuck in their comfort zone; and resists change. Expand and consider how your skills can be industry-wide if your previous field becomes extinct.
  • Being overqualified. “Not to mention having too much baggage, even in the form of experience,” says Silvis. Focus on specific skills and accomplishments, not your previous titles, that can make you feel overqualified.”
  • Does not accept technology. Make sure you’re current on the software programs that employers want ads and job descriptions require.
  • Lack of enthusiasm. You should convey your enthusiasm and eagerness for work through your actions and words. Express your expectations.

Who is hiring?

Job seekers over 50 may be surprised by the number of employment options they rarely consider. They include:

  • Assistant or Full Time Teacher/Teacher. Teaching is a great opportunity for you as an older worker to pass on your skills to the younger generation.
  • Entrepreneurship. Start your own business using your specific skills and expertise.
  • Govt. Think out of the box when it comes to government jobs. Think Homeland Security, the IRS, and the US and state Departments of Transportation, Parks and Recreation, etc.

Instead of applying for traditional jobs, use your imagination and creative skills to find an exciting, enjoyable job in a fun environment, or create your own job. “Sometimes a complete change of location offers the most rewarding opportunity,” says Silvis.

Creating a successful plan

Statistically, older workers take longer to find a job. Persistence. Be prepared to put everything you have into your job search until you succeed. Set goals, write them down; And take consistent action to achieve those goals. Break down main goals into secondary goals that serve as benchmarks for your progress. Tie each secondary goal to action steps. Remember that setbacks are inevitable, but persevere.

Expect to find the right place for you. If necessary, renew yourself; And adapt to available jobs. Challenge yourself. Step out of your comfort zone; And try new things. Imagine success. Be constantly aware of what you are aiming to achieve and what it will be like when you realize it.

No one cares more about your career and job search than you. the whole Over 50 job hunting“Take Charge” summary boxes serve as symbols of successful career accountability.

Finding employment at midlife has its own challenges; And Silvis shows us that it is possible. Preparation, persistence and positivity are key. Many libraries and programs funded at the federal, state, and local levels provide workshops on topics including behavioral-based interviewing and resume writing. Make sure you use your community resources to gain a competitive advantage; and meet your employment goals.
