Mammals of Belize

Mammals are a group of animals with backbones, bodies covered with hair, suckle their young with milk, and have special jaws. Mammals are also a group of animals in which humans live. Belizean animals include, but are not limited to, the tapir, monkey, jaguar, gibnut and kinkajou.

There are two species of monkeys in Belize: Howler and Spider. Monkeys vary in size with Howlers being large. Be careful with monkeys, although they are cute and adorable. Monkeys are known to throw objects such as stones, fruits and coconuts at people. Monkeys are as dangerous as any other animal found in the wild. The jaguar is the largest animal in Belize, measuring up to six feet long and thirty inches from the tail. Like any big cat, the Jaguar is dangerous and should not be approached or fed.

Paca is known as gibnuts in Belize and is the most prized animal in the country. Rat Queens is one of the local names given to Paca. It is said that the Queen of England was fed Paca on one of her visits to Belize. The Paca is a rodent like the South American Capybara but only half the size and its fur is like a fawn’s with white spots.

Because the tapir is a national animal in Belize it is forbidden to hunt and kill them. Belizeans call them “mountain cattle.” Mostly at night, Tapir eats grass and fruits. Growing up to 6 meters in length, tapirs are the largest animal in Belize. The April tapir is the most famous tapir in Belize. He lives in the Belize Zoo. Every year, sometime in the month of April, Belizeans celebrate April’s birthday with a horse cake as local children and visitors gather and sing Happy Birthday to April.

Known as the “night walkers” in Belize, Kinkajou are cute and look like lemurs. Kinkajous are nocturnal and prefer fruits and insects. Only about six pounds and two and a half feet long, including the tail, Kinkajous like to jump from tree to tree above the Belizean forest.

Belize is home to over 200 species of mammals, birds and reptiles. The animals mentioned above are just a few of the many and rare mammals in Belize. I hope you enjoy the delicious meats of Belize as much as I do!
