The 5 W’s Of Effective Listening
Those who study and analyze what true leadership has to say consistently realize that one cannot truly lead until one is committed to being an effective listener. They realize that there is a big difference between just hearing and listening honestly, and that although it takes little effort or skill to listen, listening requires discipline, understanding, and a willingness to consider what others are saying. One cannot listen effectively unless one emphasizes the 5 W’s: Who is involved?; Why should we care?; What is purpose and intent?; When will you act decisively and clearly?; Where will obedience get you or get you?
1. Those who commit to this must first know who they are, or who they will take with them? He thinks about what he feels in terms of how it is used and how it is used, and realizes that for any plan to be successful, it is necessary to identify a person (or people) to provide or distribute to oversee the implementation and optimization of the idea. Even the greatest idea, if left unattended or unplanned, will not work to its full potential!
2. Great leaders recognize that one of their responsibilities is to inspire and nurture others. Why should anyone care about an idea, and how can it affect and benefit them? Authentic leadership means that as we listen carefully, we ask probing questions that will answer our basic questions and/or concerns and needs.
3. What is the purpose of these ideas, and how can using these opportunities help the organization to be successful, important or stable? Is the idea consistent with the group’s mission?
4. No idea achieves its goals and objectives until we create a timeline that contains specific tasks and goals that must be accomplished and executed! Therefore, operational leaders are always asking when something will happen, who will lead the process and how it will be done quickly, decisively and effectively.
5. However, perhaps the most important fact that a leader should examine, when he really examines an idea, purpose, plan, idea, or concern, and the instructions that should be followed, is the result of continuing or avoiding action. Therefore, they should also ask where accepting the idea and going in that direction, or giving up and continuing as it is, would lead the organization.
It is not enough for a leader to simply say that they have a choice and are willing to listen. True and effective listening means committing to a non-judgmental process, where relevant and meaningful questions are asked and answered.
