Choosing an Assisted Living Home For Your Elderly Parent

Making the decision that your elderly parent needs the most help in their home is difficult. However, finding an assisted living facility that meets your needs can help. What factors should you consider when choosing an assisted living facility?

1. Approaching. If possible, choose a home that is close to your own so that you can visit often and on a random basis. Knowing that you are almost there will be comforting for your parent and will ease the transition.

2. Caregivers. Go home every shift to meet with caregivers. States require training and certification, but you should look for experienced caregivers who enjoy caring for the elderly. Sometimes you can tell by the look on their faces if they are happy there, or just doing random things. Ask how many caregivers are available for each shift, and how many people live in the home. Try to find an assisted living facility with a high caregiver to resident ratio.

3. Food. Go at mealtime. It is important that the food served is nutritious and tasty. Elderly people eat less as they get older. Cravings decrease over time, and the sweet taste decreases. Food should be tasty, fresh and of high quality so that the quantity provides enough food. Ideally, choose a boarding house that has a dietitian on staff, or one that consults with a dietitian when preparing meals. Make sure the building meets dietary needs and provides substitutes for restricted items.

4. Activities. Activities should strengthen the body, mind and spirit, and create a team. Ask for a monthly calendar of events. Are the activities fun, interesting, interesting, varied? The main reason the elderly are left in assisted living facilities is because they are living alone. An assisted living facility should not only be a safe place, but also a place of community for your loved one. Are people living in common areas, or are they all kept in their own rooms? Do they communicate over meals or at work, or is it only the caregiver’s voice?

5. Resources. Aids can greatly increase the quality of life in a care home. This is where care homes can be very different. Ask what makes their home unique. Does it take care of the body, mind and spirit? Do they provide adequate support? Special programs? Do they have doctors who make home visits?

6. Volunteers. Be devoted friends, because they can be the eyes and ears of anything that goes wrong with the house. Homes that care about the well-being of their residents often use volunteers, such as reading aloud, helping residents with cards or checks, etc., because it allows them to provide more information to the residents.

7. Pets. There are organizations all over the country that train pets and their owners to walk. Visiting animals is especially appreciated by the elderly, especially those with dementia or Alzheimer’s. Find out if volunteers come to the home, and what they do for the residents.

8. Cleanliness. Is the house clean? Do the bathrooms look and smell clean? Are the common areas organized? Do the residents look groomed and their clothes clean? (Residents have the right and have the right to refuse bathing, food, medicine, treatment and dressing and hygiene, all of which may make the resident appear to be uncared for; however, the physician, assistant or family members must be informed that any If all the residents appear to be (If you don’t care, there may be a problem with the care being provided.)

9. Violation of laws. States have regulatory agencies that keep records of subsidized housing violations. It may not concern you too much if the care home fails one of the fire safety tests, but it should concern you if there have been numerous claims of abuse, neglect, or safety.

10. Price. Care homes often have sliding fees based on the size of the room, whether it’s a room with a private bathroom, and the level of care the resident requires. The more care, the higher the interest rate. The bigger the room, the higher the price, the suites are more expensive. Personal items, such as Dependencies, other hygiene items, toothpaste, medicine, etc. are the responsibility of the resident. Meals and snacks, assistance with daily needs such as getting up, sleeping, bathing, toileting, cleaning, laundry, work and entertainment are often included in the monthly fee. Know what is not included in the payment, so there are no surprises at the end of the month. And don’t be afraid to ask what their policy is on raising fees: do they give notice, how many times have they raised fees in the past, do they expect to raise fees in the next six months?

Take a checklist or checklist with you when you visit care homes. Make sure you get the answers to all your questions so you can make an informed decision. Once you’ve done your homework and narrowed it down to the best 3 or 4 that fit your needs, if possible, take your parent to see the house. Let your parents decide who they think is right for them. You’ll minimize the change by including your parent in the decision-making process, and you’ll both have peace of mind that you’ve made the best decision.
