Epstein Barr Treatment – 7 Common Mistakes People Make When Recovering From Epstein Barr Virus

There are 7 mistakes people make when treating Epstein Barr virus that causes mononucleosis or glandular fever. These mistakes can delay recovery and sometimes lead to secondary infections such as strep throat, pneumonia, sinus infections or chronic fatigue syndrome. Let’s look at each of these errors in detail:

Mistake 1 – Don’t rest your body

The most common mistake people make is not relaxing when they are diagnosed with the Epstein Barr virus. Symptoms of mononucleosis can include fatigue, sore throat, swollen glands, muscle pain, headache, nausea and sometimes fever. Despite these debilitating symptoms, some people try to continue going to work, school or college, running a home, running after their family. There is no way you can recover quickly and completely from Epstein Barr if you don’t stop and rest your body.

Mistake 2 – Not getting enough sleep

Continuing from this first mistake is the second mistake – not getting enough sleep. Your body needs a good night’s sleep as you recover from Epstein Barr. When you sleep, your body produces hormones that help you grow. Lack of sleep and going to bed too late (after 11pm) will make your body less active.

To ensure that you are in bed by 11pm and have a good night’s sleep, make sure you are not watching TV, playing computer games, drinking caffeine, working or rushing your bedtime. Make a habit of relaxing before bed. Taking a warm bath, reading quietly in bed, meditating, doing yoga or enjoying chamomile tea are great ideas to try.

Mistake 3 – Not enough water

Now the third mistake, and this is probably the most common mistake I see in my patients, is not drinking enough water to flush the Epstein Barr virus and toxins out of your body. Your goal should be to drink 8 glasses of water a day. Water can include plain water, herbal tea, lemon in hot water, broth, soup and fresh vegetable juices. Your fluids should not include tea, coffee, soft drinks or alcohol which will only dehydrate your body and make you feel sick.

For some people with mononucleosis, the throat can be very sore and swollen, making it difficult to swallow. In this case, hot tea with lemon and honey can help soothe the throat and make it easier to drink. Alternatively, sucking on ice can reduce pain and rehydrate your body.

Mistake 4 – Eating the wrong foods

One of the cheapest and easiest ways to treat Epstein Barr is a healthy diet. How well your immune system works is directly related to what you eat. If you eat all the wrong foods such as sugar, white flour, junk food, alcohol, coffee and saturated fat then there is no way for you to recover from mononucleosis. Your body needs the right vitamins, minerals, nutrients, fiber and essential fats to support your immune system, reduce fatigue and help your body deal with stress.

The best foods to treat Epstein Barr come from good protein foods such as fish, chicken, tofu, whey protein, eggs, nuts, seeds and beans. Every meal should contain a lot of fruits and vegetables – keep about 80% of your plate with green vegetables, salads, vegetables and low-carbohydrate fruits. Add essential oils such as fish oil, avocado, cold-pressed olive oil or flaxseed oil, and you have a complete diet that will help you treat mononucleosis effectively.

Mistake 5 – Treating Epstein Barr virus with antibiotics

Antibiotics are not used to treat Epstein Barr virus. Antibiotics work against bacteria, not viruses. Sometimes the use of antibiotics to treat Epstein Barr can cause skin rashes, fungal overgrowth, digestive disorders and immune suppression.

Mistake 6 – Not taking supplements

One of the fastest ways to treat Epstein Barr is to add supplements to your diet. I give all my mononucleosis patients vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium with good results. B vitamins and magnesium also help to repair the adrenal glands, improve energy levels and improve sleep.

There are also great herbs for treating Epstein Barr. The best are olive leaf, echinacea, garlic and astragalus. The right amount of food and herbs for you will vary depending on your age, the severity of your illness and the amount of food you eat.

Mistake 7 – Resuming work too quickly

Getting back to exercise or daily activities as quickly as possible is a surefire way to help you get back on track. Many people start feeling a little better, and rush back to their old job or sport, only to find that they relapse and start doing worse again. The best advice I can give here is to take things slowly. Start by going slow and checking how your body responds. Do an hour of housework or shopping and see how you feel. Maybe go back to work or college for half a day and see how you can cope. Build slowly over a few weeks by taking time to rest your body, eat well, take your supplements and drink plenty of water.

The Epstein Barr virus is a latent virus, so once you have it, it can reappear if you stress your body or exercise too much.
