Motivation By Desire

Most of us don’t think about what we want in life. Perhaps we need to remind ourselves of the importance of rediscovering our passions and rediscovering the fire that makes life worthwhile.

If we fail to do this we will be stuck in the economy and will not use our full potential. It is true that illness or death can destroy our dreams but if we have tried this far we will not regret it.

Steve Prefontaine, America’s greatest 5000 meter runner, is one man who never rested on his laurels even though he sadly passed away before he could achieve all of his dreams.

I recently watched a movie about his life and found it moving to say the least. Above all, the film showed what persistent passion can achieve even when thwarted by death.

At the age of sixteen, Steve Prefontaine was clear about his dreams. He wanted to run and win gold at the Munich Olympics. “No one is going to stop me.” Running became his life.

Bill Bowerman, head coach at the University of Oregon, wrote him a letter on the front page of the newspaper: “Dear Pre, If you want to come to the University of Oregon there is no doubt in my mind you will be the greatest distance. runner in the world.” He understood what would attract the mind of a winner.

Steve went to Oregon during the Vietnam War protests. He appreciated his good fortune: “Man, if it wasn’t for running I’d be dodging bullets in ‘Nam instead of coaching in Munich.”

He expressed his success often alone and with his friend: “You really know how to talk sweetly to a girl.” Mac Wilkins, the great discus thrower, thought she was a “cocky little lady.”

But the head coach knew that his cocky behavior was worth its weight in gold: “I want to bottle it and force the rest.” The coach knew that Steve had a winning spirit and was fueled by the desire to win.

His roommate said: “Back then everyone had dope or alcohol. Pre’s drugs beat everything.” Sometimes Steve’s words to the press were arrogant. The assistant coach told him that, because of his words, every athlete in the country would shoot him. “Bring them.” Steve replied.

He always found time for children “He saw himself in their little faces.” But he didn’t let the nine-year-old defeat him in the race. “You can’t let a lost mind get in here (pointing to his brain). All my life people have been saying to me: ‘You’re too young, Pre; you’re not fast enough, Pre; stop your bullshit. Dream on, Steve.’ He forgot something: I have to win.”

His girlfriend said about him: “He always had a big need; a constant need; Steve had a great desire or need to succeed and be successful. He is the only person who has ever held any American record between 2000 and 10000 meters. This was never the same.

At the Munich Olympics in 1972, Israeli athletes were captured and killed. The Games continued and Steve Prefontaine was awarded the gold medal in the 5000 meters.

Things didn’t go well, but he came in fourth. Viren from Finland who won the race was 23 years old. Steve was 21 years old. Steve was overwhelmed. He just banged his head against the wall. “It’s my fault. I messed up.” The assistant coach said “You’ve chased your heart out. You need to stop, Pre.”

At home, her boyfriend told her that he and the whole town were very proud of her. Steve couldn’t believe it: “Yeah, sure; they’ll probably name the street after me. They’ll call it ‘Fourth Street’.”

He told his coach, Bill, not to retire but Bill had had enough: “He who defies time has an enemy that cannot be hurt. I’m 62 years old. I’m getting too old for all this. How the US team in Olympic history.”

Steve replied: “That wasn’t your fault.” You didn’t run those races for us. We are the ones who blew it.

Bill disagreed: “You could have run for bronze or silver.” You ran to win.

Steve revealed his feelings: “It’s funny; these days I don’t know if I want to train like hell and beat Viren’s ass or stay in bed.”

Bill Bowerman told him he was big now. No one could wipe his bottom for him: “If you want to run, you run. If you don’t, you walk away. No one can teach desire, Pre.” We all need to find our dreams and, as adults, we are the only ones who can follow our dreams.

It took some time but Steve came back and found his passion again. But now he knew that he had to compete with the winners to defeat them. He fought for better support for American athletes after their college days. After a while, this success was won.

This time he managed to organize a trip to Oregon with a Finnish group. Mac Wilkins was able to beat the world record holder in this meeting.

At the next meeting, Mac Wilkins showed his new respect for Steve: “You know something. All these years to me you had a little talent. I didn’t understand you, but now I do. it disrupts my routine.”

Mac had a desire to be as good as Steve. In 1976 he broke the discus world record and won gold in Montreal. Lust for gold makes athletes hate anything that interferes with their goals to win. It makes them get up early to teach. Steve’s passion had returned but sadly he died in a car accident the evening after Finn’s farewell party. He never had his second chance to win gold.

Bowerman commented on his life: “He was a rare athlete – the type that a coach sees only once in a lifetime.”

His first love said sadly: “I realized I was fixated on things when we broke up and he didn’t.”

The coach’s assistant said: “Let’s be honest. The only reason we’re talking about Pre now is because Pre was successful. People need winners. Pre went to Munich to win and Montreal, by God, could have.

The funeral procession circled the tracks at Hayward Field, Oregon. Bill Bowerman gave the eulogy: “Pre ran every race like it was his last. This is the last. This is Steve Prefontaine’s bell.”

The mourners chanted: “Go Pre! Go Pre!” how his body passed as he did in his driving days. He didn’t win gold at the Olympics but he left a golden example behind him. He showed us the mindset of a winner whose desire or need to be successful was great. We can all learn something from this.

The powerful song “Forever Young” by Bob Dylan ended the film.
