The Mystery of Babaji

Many spiritual seekers have become familiar with Mahavatar Babaji, and the artist’s view of him, through Paramahansa Yogananda’s “Autobiography of a Yogi”. Some say that this same Babaji was known as Hariakhan Baba, from the early 1800s until 1922, and that he was reborn in 1970, in a cave in northern India, looking very young but changing greatly at the age of fourteen. Others believe that the real Maha Avatar Babaji is a separate entity; one who had a female body in his youth, which gradually transformed into a bald Willie Nelson image, before leaving his body in 1997. This Babaji claimed that all versions of Hariakhan Baba were his disciples. So, who is the real Babaji? Or are all these different manifestations of the same Babaji?

I personally have had a deep connection with the old Hariakhan Babaji and the younger Haidakhan Babaji, as they were known. When my house burned in 1987, the picture of old Hariakhan Babaji did not burn. And then years later, when it came time to sell our rebuilt house because of the divorce, I prayed deeply to young Babaji for his help, promising to come to his ashram in India, if the house was sold. The banks couldn’t finance our house, because it didn’t have enough power and energy, and that alone cut ninety-five percent of what we could afford. Miraculously, the house was sold the next day and I soon went to India, and learned more about Babaji.

As divine guidance and karma would have it, I was given Babaji’s favorite silver silk coat as my Christmas present, at his ashram in Haidakhan in 1994. This was a Christmas I will never forget in one of the holiest places on earth. Then I was read by saint Shastraji, who lived with Babaji almost every day for fourteen years. He said that Babaji appeared to me three times before in this life and I did not recognize him, but he will come again soon. Then I went to the opening, full moon night of the 1995 Kumbha Mela festival in Allahabad, and ten million souls were already there! Then Babaji appeared to me as time stood still. He asked me in perfect English, “Are you having fun?” I couldn’t find my words to answer. Then he disappeared, leaving me blessed and confused. Yes, I was having fun! And now I felt as if Babaji had completely blessed my journey to India, and, in fact, my whole life, unknown to me most of the time.

A few years later, with the advent of our social network, I started researching everything I could find on Babaji. There is a lot out there and a lot of it seems contradictory and confusing. However, I have realized what Babaji said, “I am not the body and there is nothing.” Yogananda said, “Babaji is beyond human understanding.” Of course! I think different versions of Babaji attract different students. For those who believe that Babaji was a manifestation of Krishna and inspired Kriya yoga, he appears as the long-haired figure known as Kriya Babaji in Yogananda’s book. To those who believe that Babaji is Lord Shiva incarnate, he appears as two versions of Haidakhan Baba. I am still confused by Willie Nelson’s version of Babaji and why no one seems to know much about this incarnation. Most of the information available, doesn’t seem to add up, to me. However, I feel that Babaji can manifest any form, including animals. His message is what matters, not the body. This debate will never be resolved by rational thought. For me, there is only one God who lives eternally in truth, simplicity and love. That is Babaji and the message that I hear, in my heart.
