Wireless Network Guide – Repeating Your Wireless Network

Home routers are often not up to the task of broadcasting clear and powerful audio throughout the home. Because this is different, the software on the router is not working or the amount of interference that the house creates can affect the total distance that the wireless signal can be sent. There are many things you can do to share your internet throughout the home, some of which are expensive for example upgrading your home with an access point or using a wireless repeater. This guide will show you the basics of setting up a wireless repeater using the LinkSys Wireless-G WRT54GL.

This portable router featured a linux operating system that allowed itself to be upgraded or flashed by third-party software. Third-party software can be found on the DD-WRT website. Search for your router in the database and the page will let you know if it is possible to flash DD-WRT (linux system) firmware on your router. Once it’s flashed, follow the steps below.

1. Configure the router you want to duplicate;

The router that has the internet needs to be set up first and some things will need to be written to be used in the router. To simplify the network configuration, make sure the wireless security is set to ‘None’, and the wireless channel used is a specific number (6, 9, or 11). In addition to these two settings, change the wireless mode to G. For now, don’t worry that your network is open, you will reset this once you confirm that the repeater is working. Check the current SSID.

2. Configure the repeater router;

After flashing the DD-WRT firmware on your new router, connect to it using your web browser (usually 192.168.1.1). Also configure the IP addresses to be unique, ensuring that the subnet is the same. So for example, if the main router has an IP address of 192.168.1.1 change the new router to 192.168.2.1 using the same subnet as the main router (ie 255.255.255.0). Make sure DHCP is enabled at this point.

Once the content is saved, reconnect to the repeater using the new IP address, for example 192.168.2.1.

Under the wireless tab, set the ‘wl0’ mode and make sure the SSID is set to the main router’s SSID. Configure the channel and interface to match the receiving router. Set the wireless mode to ‘Repeater’ and the network mode to ‘Bridged’.

Now create a wireless adapter, and specify the SSID of the new duplicated network.

Now go to the ‘Wireless Security’ tab to set the security method used to connect this repeater to the main router. In this case, select ‘disabled’, and set the backup protection option to disabled.

Remember, on each page, click the ‘Apply’ button. Once all the above is done, go to the ‘Administration’ folder, select the save button and restart button. The wireless router will now reboot.

3. Check the internet

After the repeater restarts, the connection to the Internet should be established. If the connection is working, go through each router and set the wireless security settings (ie WPA or WPA2), making sure the settings are exactly the same. Once the settings are set, reboot the primary router, and once it’s up, reboot the replicator. The router should automatically connect and pass any requests to the primary router.

Summary

Replicating a wireless network is not that difficult as long as the devices used are compatible. In this example, Cisco WAG320 and LinkSys WRT54GL were used. It’s important that all routers have the same security settings and the correct wireless channels, and always start with the most important settings and work your way up until you’ve configured them to meet your needs.
