The Art of Tipping in Punta Cana

When you’re on vacation it can sometimes be difficult to know how to give tips. Who would you tell him? When and how much should you give? These are the questions I hear from visitors to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

People who work in tourism in Punta Cana usually receive a small salary, which is supplemented by tips and sales services (eg tours). These hard-working people are used to receiving and often expect to receive warnings about their work.

If you want to be ready to tip from the moment you arrive in Punta Cana, it would be a good idea to make sure you have plenty of USD credit. When you arrive in Punta Cana, you can change large USD bills into small bills or withdraw money in the local currency (ie Dominican Peso) at any ATM. One USD is about 40 Dominican Pesos.

Arrival at the airport:

It all starts when you arrive at the airport in Punta Cana. You will be greeted by friendly porters/bellboys who are ready to help you find and transport your luggage from the baggage claim area to the car or bus that will take you to your destination. The carrier expects to charge USD 1 per suitcase, or more if your luggage is heavy or if you have a lot of it.

On social media:

When you arrive at the resort, you can tell the driver if you feel that he has been driving well, has been friendly and is generally satisfied with what he is doing for you. Usually, you have to give 10-15% of the cost of the trip, which is usually approx. USD 3-5 if your destination was in Punta Cana or Bávaro (10-30 minutes from the airport).

When you arrive at the resort, the concierge, who will help you with your luggage, will greet you. You can give him USD 1 per suitcase if he brings your luggage to your room.

It is always better to give a maid, who cleans your room, either at the beginning of the holiday or during your stay. Usually, you should tip the maid about USD 2 per day and leave the money on the bed when she is sure to get it.

The next time you’re on vacation in Punta Cana, you’ll need the help of a concierge — for example, to make dinner reservations. A tip of USD 5-10 for his help will go a long way, and you can see that a table at the restaurant, which was previously full, is now available for you at the hour you want. You can also see that something, which was not possible for you to find suddenly, becomes “no problemo”.

The caterers and bartenders will certainly appreciate your tip. You can leave a larger tip of approx. USD 10-20 at the beginning of your vacation (so they won’t forget you) or small tips during your vacation (for example USD 1-2 every time you get a good job).

On a trip or on the golf course:

If you’re going on vacation in Punta Cana, it’s a good idea to bring a tip for the tour guide. They will share the instructions with the driver and/or other staff during the trip. If you’re well-timed, you can easily drop USD 2-3 for a half-day tour and USD 5 for a full-day tour. If you have gone on a private tour with a private driver or tour guide, you should leave a larger tip, for example USD 10.

If you are a professional golfer and you are going to play one of the courses in Punta Cana or Casa de Campo where caddies are allowed (Punta Espada, Corales or Teeth of the Dog), you will have to pay USD 25-30. cadi. You usually only need one caddy for a two-seater golf cart. Besides the caddy fee, a tip of USD 15-20 per person is expected, depending on how satisfied you are with the caddy or how well you played… and how happy you are after the round.

If someone cleans your golf clubs and/or shoes after a round, you should tip this person USD 3-5.

Local restaurants:

If you decide to go out to eat at one of the restaurants in Punta Cana, you should know that there is usually a 10% tip included in your bill (by law). In most places, you are expected to leave an additional tip of 5-10% of the bill on your bill if you are satisfied with the food and service.

It can seem like you can’t travel without losing money and tips left and right. Don’t give up – if all else fails and you should be in doubt, follow your instincts. If you are happy with the service you have been given, and if you have no complaints about it, the best way to show your appreciation is to leave a warning to the people who take care of you.

Happy holidays!
