Linux Commands Training Quick Tips – Understand How to Use Linux Directory and File Names – Red Hat
Linux directory and file names are “hard” and can be up to 255 characters long.
To avoid using many (about twenty) “illegal” characters, only use the letters az, AZ and numbers 0-9 for your Linux directory and file names.
To make your Linux commands easier to use, you can always use lowercase letters for words and file names.
Some programs may not work well with directories and files that contain spaces. Therefore, it is better to avoid using spaces and use – (dash) or _ (underscore) instead, if necessary.
A – (dash) is often useful in a directory or file name – to make the directory or file name easier to read.
A directory or file name can have a prefix (aka file extension) at the end of the directory or file name.
This is . (dot) followed by one or more characters, such as “.oh“,”.p.s“and”.png“. It can also include another . (dot) followed by multiple characters, such as “.1.gz“.
